Ray Green MBE – Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Green MBE, President of Heath Town Swimming Club, who died peacefully on Saturday 31st January 2026, shortly after celebrating his 91st birthday.

Ray joined Heath Town Swimming Club in the late 1970’s when the club was based at the old Heath Town Baths on Tudor Road, initially bringing his children along to develop their swimming. His commitment to the club quickly grew and records show that he became a committee member in 1979. From that point on Ray devoted more than four decades to the club, serving in various committee roles until stepping down as chairman around five years ago.

Beyond the club, Ray was deeply committed to education. He served as a Governor at Perry Hall School and, more recently, at Fallings Park Primary School until 2024. Ray firmly believed that every child deserved equal opportunities in education and that there should be no barriers to learning to swim or to compete.

Although Ray never sought recognition, his outstanding service to swimming and education was formally acknowledged when he was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace on 13th June 2009 — an honour of which he was immensely proud.

On a personal note, Ray mentored me during my early days as a swimming referee. He strongly believed in treating everyone — especially children — with equity, dignity and fairness, values he lived by throughout his life.

Ray was a true gentleman, a devoted husband and father, and someone who touched the lives of countless families through his kindness, guidance and dedication.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his wife Sheila, his children Stuart, Alison and Fiona, their partners, grandchildren and great-grandchild at this very difficult time.

Rest in peace, Ray. You will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. 🖤

Malcolm , Club Secretary on behalf of the club.
